Advent Book Study

In addition to the beautiful Advent devotional and materials from Sanctified Art available for Advent, you are invited to participate in a book study. The book, selected by the Education Committee, is called Light of the World: A Beginner’s Guide to Advent by New Testament scholar Dr. Amy-Jill Levine.

If you grew up in church as I did, it might be hard to think of yourself as a “beginner” when it comes to Advent We may have various knowledge about the scriptures and traditions, and most of us would probably not call ourselves experts. But beginners?

The more I think about it and familiarize myself with the book study material, the more I see how it speaks to people at all levels of knowledge and interest. Dr. Levine rightly says of Advent, “Its lessons are never ending, beautiful, and inspirational.” We can all benefit from returning to the basics to learn and re-learn aspects of Advent that speak to us differently now because of life’s changing seasons. Advent also begins the Christian year, so its lessons can frame the months ahead in personal and communal ways. For me, I’m a beginner in that this is my first Advent at St. Andrews. Exploring this book with you will help me learn more about the church, the members, and the work God has for us.

Logistically, we’re also trying a slightly new approach to how and when we meet, so adopting a beginner’s mindset will be important in that way, too. Two book study groups will be offered–one on Zoom and one in person.

  • The Zoom group will temporarily take the time slot that Lunch and Learn currently occupies, which is Wednesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch-and-Learn will pause their usual study and pick back up in the new year, so whether you are a longtime L-and-L participant or have never attended, you are invited to try out this mid-week, mid-day Advent study group. Since it is during lunchtime, eating is welcome! Dates: November 30, December 7, 14, and 21.
  • The in-person group will meet at the church (room TBD) on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. The Closer Walk group has graciously agreed to team up with us to make this time available to all. Anyone who wants to may plan to go to lunch together after the meeting. Dates: December 3, 10, 17, and January 7.

More details will be shared in the weeks ahead. For now, please reach out if you have questions. You can also go ahead and order your copy of the book online or from a local bookseller. Many retailers sell it. If you need assistance getting a book, you can contact me at ashley@sapctucker.org. May we all find a way to be beginners again this Advent!

Advent begins Sunday, November 27th. Our theme is From Generation to Generation, and we will use materials from Sanctified Art. Advent devotionals–which include prayers, journal prompts, reflections, original art, and coloring pages all inspired by our scripture texts for the season–will be available in the Narthex and outside the church office in the breezeway beginning November 20th. Stay tuned for details as we approach this season of reflection and anticipation.
