During Lent Caring for Creation invites you to think about it! How much food do you waste from uneaten leftovers and spoiled produce? On average Americans waste 1400 calories of food a day while, in 2008, 49 million Americans were food insecure. Americans disposed more than 35 million tons of food waste in 2013. Some 95 percent of this food ended up in landfills or combustion facilities. In landfills, food breaks down to produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change.
