“Keep everyone safe—volunteers, visitors, staff—but the pantry will continue to operate.” That mandate guided all our actions. Ultimately, we moved the pantry to the parking lot.
You didn’t even wait for a call for help. You dropped off food. You mailed food to us. You made financial contributions to help your neighbor NOW. You had time at home—so you came and volunteered, filling the gaps left when our usual volunteers sheltered in place. Packing bags, moving thousands of pounds of food, working outside in wind, rain, and some gorgeous days.
The requests for food started building slowly. March was only a little busier than February, but we saw an uptick in new families visiting. Then April. Food requests doubled what we experienced just months earlier. First-time visitors up 340%. What did you do? You met the need. You sent more food—Amazon and Wal-Mart and UPS delivering box after box
You brought carloads of groceries, risking a trip to the grocery store …to feed your neighbor who couldn’t do that. You understood many people in our community had lost employment. You sent checks and made online donations—“Please use this gift to help those who are hurting,” you told us.
Requests for financial assistance grew—water bills, power bills, monthly rent—and your generosity allowed us to help more neighbors.
Not just more families, but at a higher level of assistance. In fact, we increased our financial assistance by 5 times each month. And doubled the maximum help per family. Your gifts relieved families of stress and worry about losing their homes. As your neighbor Juanita* called to say, “Thank you! I have been sick, had no money, and I truly appreciate this help. May God bless you! Thank you very much!”
We add a huge “Thank You” to Juanita’s! This community—you and people like you—is beautiful and loving. God Bless you and your family!
