Adult Sunday School Elective begins October 9: Christian Hope in An Anxious World  The last few years have seen dizzying social change in the United States. Small wonder, then, that the dominant mood among many Christians is anxiety about what it means to be a follower of Jesus in the world today. The Church confesses that Jesus Christ is its hope and is itself a community of hope. Through biblical study and theological insights participants will explore why Christian hope matters in such an anxious and fearful world-the hope that is within us, the hope that does not disappoint us, and the hope we can rejoice in. Room 117:  Rev. Camille LeBron Powell.
October 19- Jesus said: Thou shalt pass the offering plate.

Jesus didn’t say that. But he did have a lot to say about money and what we do with it. Together we’ll explore what he does say about money, the history of church offering, and our own understanding of stewardship and generosity.

On October 30th, Saint Andrews will again celebrate a Kirking of the Tartans, a service reflecting on the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church, at 10:00 am worship. Music of Scotland and Celtic traditions past and present highlight the service, which emphasize the traditions of the reformed church.

The Kirking is a modern tradition, introduced by Rev. Dr. Peter Marshall on April 27, 1941, at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. The ceremony was intended as a service a rededication to Scottish heritage and devotion to God.

Peter Marshall, a native Scot who emigrated to the United States in 1927, graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1931 and served as pastor of First Presbyterian in Covington, Georgia before becoming pastor of Westminster Presbyterian in Atlanta. He became pastor of New York Avenue Presbyterian in 1937 and served twice as the Chaplain of the United States Senate.

Kirk is Scottish for church, and tartans, with their distinctive cross-lined patterns, represent Scottish clans, families, and regions. Perhaps no symbol is more associated with Scotland and Scottish history than the tartan.

The tradition of the tartan is ancient and was part of the everyday attire of the Highland people for centuries. Tartans were a symbol of kinship. Groups of families, called clans, had their own distinctive patterns and colors. In the same way we have a flag representing all of us as a nation, and also have a state flag as Georgians, county flags for DeKalb and Gwinnett citizens, we have our beautiful banner of memories representing all the families of our church – our kinship as a part of the body of Jesus Christ that is the clan of St. Andrews.

This Sunday is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. The sanctuary will include visual reminders of our connections with Christians around the world. We’ll share the Lord’s Supper and taste different bread representing the diversity present at Christ’s table.
The Worship Ministry invites anyone who speaks another language to be a part of this service through scripture reading, prayers, or serving Communion if you are ordained.
If you have items from other countries that can be used as decoration, the Worship Ministry would love to incorporate these items Sunday. If you have the gift of baking, loaves of bread would be welcomed.
Contact Molly Darnell at MollyDarnell1@gmail.com to volunteer.
