Journey Men Night Shelter is one of our missions at St. Andrews. We serve the men dinner on the first Friday of each month. (Tonight we are having a Fourth of July picnic with them), and it’s always a fun night.

The following is an opportunity to serve Journey in other capacities or to find something for a young person to do this summer:

On Thursday, July 14, Journey will be hosting a volunteer meeting for Journey Men’s Shelter and you’re invited.

We are not only one of the best programs in Atlanta for men experiencing homelessness; we are also a single-family dwelling with 20+ ‘siblings,’ and THAT creates a lot of projects!

The residents of our program manage the chores that become necessary with the heavy foot-traffic and activity within our walls. We are calling on our volunteers to help us with the extra upkeep that is familiar to most households — painting, yard work, gutters, cleaning out closets, minor repairs, and the decorator touches that will make our shelter feel more like a home.

Perhaps manual labor is not your thing, and your real muscle is education, life-readiness empowerment, or your ability on a computer. There are an equal many tasks available that are perfect for a volunteer with these skills. Even if you’re not entirely comfortable on a computer, we’re certain that after one hour of training you’ll be a tremendous help to the administrative side of our business — data entry, filing, database management, and more. Please don’t be shy.

Last but certainly not least, there’s nothing more powerful than collective brainpower to make transformative change. By bringing together many minds with knowledge of our program, the city we live in, and the resources that exist — we can come up with creative ideas to generate the funds needed to expand our program. This will, in turn, become new and exciting ways to get involved.

Without you, we achieve far less than we do with you.
Please join us.

Honduras Mission Team– Please continue to pray for our team that will be returning from Honduras on Saturday evening, July 2,  from a week in mission.  Twenty-one youth and adults from St. Andrews led Vacation Bible School in the two room school house, and built latrines and eco fire wood stoves for cooking in the village of Casa Quemada.

This Spring the session elected a search committee to fill the program position for children and youth. That search committee includes Erin Johnston, Bret Moore, L.B. Todd, Rachel Ellingson, and me in an ex officio role. As the role will continue to be a part-time position, the search committee had the unique opportunity to search for either a contract position as Director for Children/Youth (non-ordained, as in Kristy’s case), or a contract call position as Associate Pastor for Children/Youth (ordained). After reviewing resumes and conducting interviews the committee was unanimous in their choice. That candidate, who will be our part-time contract call associate pastor, was confirmed unanimously and enthusiastically by the session.
It is with great joy and gratitude that, on behalf of the search committee, I get to share the good news about the future of our children and youth ministry programs at St. Andrews. So, without further ado, we present to you Steve Sankey as our new Associate Pastor for Children and Youth Ministry. He is a 2014 graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary and a candidate for ordination in the Presbytery of East Iowa. Even before the search committee met with Steve they knew he special. In his cover letter he said:
“I want to help guide a sustainable children and youth ministry that not only serves the children, youth and families of the church, but involves and gives life to the entire church. From what I hear, your church is already doing great ministry for the children and youth in your midst. It would be my great joy to partner with you in raising up the children and youth of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church to know the God who loves us, and to share that love with the world.”
A contract call pastor position is quite different from a called and installed pastor (like me). It does not require a congregationally elected Pastor Nominating Committee or congregational vote on the candidate. This kind of position also costs the church significantly less because the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta does not require that we pay full Board of Pensions benefits and insurance. The job description and responsibilities are almost identical whether ordained or not and the time expectation (20 hours per week) is the same. For our purposes, though, just think of Steve as our “Associate Pastor”.
Steve’s official start date will be July 13. We look forward to introducing Steve to the congregation formally so stay tuned for more information about that. Keep reading to find out what he says about himself. You’re going to love him!
Peace,
Camille

Hello St. Andrew’s!
My name is Steve Sankey and I look forward to being your Associate Pastor for Children and Youth Ministry! I grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and went to Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA (near Pittsburgh) where I met my wife, Jennie (who is from Texas, got all that?). She is the Associate Pastor for Christian Education at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Duluth. We currently live in Dunwoody with our dog, Bob. I enjoy movies, gardening, and playing the alto saxophone. When I’m not working at the church, I will be working in construction as a carpenter’s assistant.
Growing up, I was always in church. My mom cooked meals for Logos (the Wednesday night program for children) and my dad was an elder. It was a place where I could be myself, was surrounded by adults who cared about me, and where I had fun! It was through those experiences and church community that I learned about faith and that I am a child of God.
It is my great joy to accept a call to your church. I am excited to join with you all in the Holy ministry of raising up the children and youth of St. Andrew’s, to pass on our faith, and to help them know they are a child of God.  I look forward to meeting you all this month!
Peace,
Steve

It’s almost here, Friday, July 8, 7 p.m., in Fellowship Hall, we will channel our inner Maria and Captain Von Trapp and all their kids.  It will be a fun, family night in the cool of Fellowship Hall.

Yesterday during worship we commissioned our summer mission team that leaves this coming Saturday for Honduras. Twenty-one of our adults and youth will head to Rancho el Paraiso/Olancho, Honduras (HOI’s primary site in the Agalta Valley)  – located in northern Honduras; dormitories situated on a fully operational 1,400 acre Ranch; HOI has spent over 25 years working in this area; work projects vary/primarily focused on a range of community development and economic development projects including, but not limited to: building latrines, mudding homes, mixing and pouring concrete floors, building eco-stoves and eco-ovens.
Our team returns the following Saturday after a week of hard work and helping with Vacation Bible School.

Good Neighbor Back to School Shop Donations: NETWorks Cooperative Ministry, here in Tucker, will offer a Back To School Shop to sell new school supplies at discounted prices, offering neighbors in need a respectful way to prepare for the new school year. This is an opportunity for parents with financial challenges in Northalke-Embry Hills-Tucker to provide for their families in an affordable manner. More information and the list of supplies needed is available at http://www.networkscoop.org/bts/ . We’ll be collecting donation in the Narthex through July 10.

Tsiry, Faratiana, and Tinahy welcomed their baby girl, Mihatia Hasina on June 8. We are, as their church family, so excited to welcome this new baby into our congregation.
Recently if you’ve been part of an email chain (mainly the women of the church), you’re aware that Mihatia developed jaundice and was hospitalized last night. She has to stay one more night, but our prayer is that she comes home tomorrow healthy and flourishing.
This email chain of women has started coordinating meals for the family, and they’ve found a rocker for Fara to help soothe her baby. They are also trying to find a way to help Fara’s mother get her visa so she can visit from Madagascar and help Fara and the baby. Her mother’s visa has been rejected twice placing a burden on this grandmother and her daughter who needs her mom’s emotional support now.
If you can think of ways to help, contact our office, office@standrewspresbyterian.org and ask to be put in touch with the remarkable women of St. Andrews.

On Friday, July 1, the Mission Ministry will provide the evening meal for the residents at the Journey Men’s Shelter.  As this is the 4th of July weekend, we will provide a picnic style menu with hamburgers/hotdogs/brats (cooked on charcoal grills there) and sides and dessert.  We did this last year and it was a great time of fellowship and service for both the volunteers from SAPC and the residents.  Dinner is done family-style and is a great opportunity to meet and fellowship with the residents (many of whom have interesting life stories) and to learn more about this successful program from the staff and residents.  If you are interested in participating as one of the servers with the team, assisting with grilling at the shelter, providing sides/desserts/money donations or have questions please contact Mike Bearden ( michaelrbearden@bellsouth.net ).  Food donations need to be dropped off at Heffner Hall between 5 and 6 pm on Friday, July 1.  If you would like to assist at Journey and need a ride or want to follow someone there you need to be at Heffner Hall by 6 pm on Friday.  Dinner will be served at 7 pm at Journey.

On Sunday, June 12, following the worship service, the Mission Ministry will have an opportunity for members of the congregation to sign up to provide support to the Thornwell Building Families Program that we are hosting.  A number of books and games and some miscellaneous supplies have been identified that are needed for the in-home training and skills work with the families that participate in the program.  Sign up sheets to provide the various items will be available in the Narthex after worship on June 12 – please see Mary O’Brien or Mike Bearden (for questions – michaelrbearden@bellsouth.net  ).  Copies of the list of needed items are available in the Narthex for the next couple of weeks and by clicking on this link.

Wish List – Thornwell Building Families Program – from Say Spencer (1)

If you want to help and prefer to do a monetary donation that will be fine, too – please see Mary O’Brien or Mike Bearden.
