Two volunteers from St. Andrews helped with the Book Club Read Aloud program Wednesday at Brockett Elementary. sponsored by EIRO (the Greek word for join), Brockett Elementary Administration and staff, Brockett Elementary PTA, Dekalb Summer Reading Partner ship Roly Poly, Tucker Farmers Market, Tucker Civic Association and five churches including St. Andrews.

Parents and teachers got to meet and kids got to meet their teachers for next year and see their classroom for the coming year. The volunteers read stories for each age group and then distributed a bag filled with a new book and several activities and a list of resources for summer adventures.

Are you or someone you know having power struggles with the children in your life? Building Families is an evidenced-based, in-home program that offers practical, hands-on tools and teaches specific skills to improve children’s behavior and reduce stress for parents. Through the use of Family Specialists, the program strives to improve communication and healthy family functioning through the use of tested parenting techniques taught by experienced and passionate professionals.

The Building Families program grew out of programs offered at Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, SC, which has been providing services to children and families since 1875. Thornwell can now offer services to families beyond its residential campus and is excited to announce that St. Andrews Presbyterian Church is their partner here in Tucker and the surrounding areas to launch Building Families in this area. This in-home program is offered in South Carolina, Florida, and launched in Georgia two years ago.

Sarah “Say” Spencer, BSW, MSW, LCSW, Family Specialist and Building Families Georgia Supervisor now has an office at St. Andrews and is available for parenting seminars, PTA programs, workshops, and offers the services of Building Families through customized programs to fit each family’s needs and parental goals.

On June 10 at 6 PM, join us for a one-man musical, The Cotton Patch Gospel, performed by Dr. Tommy Tucker. Dr. Tucker is an accomplished bluegrass musician and songwriter who has performed at festivals and events across South Florida for more than 25 years with the Tucker Brothers Band. The Cotton Patch Gospel is a fun retelling of the Gospel story, southern-style. Based on Clarence Jordan’s Cotton Patch Gospel of Matthew and John, the two-act play was written by Tom Key and Russell Treyz and features music by Harry Chapin. Bring your chairs, bring your blankets, and bring your family, friends, and neighbors for a toe-tapping, hand-clapping good time!

The amazing liturgical dance group, Little Light of Mine, practices every Monday at St. Andrews.  Every year they lead worship one Sunday and host a luncheon to show their appreciation.  This year they have just performed in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and received two standing ovations.

Our own Rachel Ellingson choreographs the dances, and Linda Weaver directs the group.

Check out their page on Facebook to see a video and pictures.

Lemonade in the Shade will begin on May 29th and continue through September 4th.  The Fellowship  Committee is looking for volunteers for each week to set up the tables and provide the lemonade.  You may also bring snacks, such as fruit or cookies, if you wish.  If you wish to participate, please contact Lynn Kozlosky
