Sunday at 6 pm: all youth and parents are invited to participate in a listening session about the future of youth ministry staffing.  Elders and the pastor will meet with parents and youth separately to hear hope and concerns for the next person to fill this program staff position after Kristy graduates and heads off to her first ordained call. If anyone in the congregation would like to share input and ideas about the process and position please contact Camille LeBron Powell, Jane Thomas, Erin Johnston, or Mark Mahaffey.

The PC (USA) Special Offerings Ministry and Missions Agency has recognized the St. Andrews as a Four for Four Congregation for our participation in the denomination’s four special offerings during 2015 – One Great Hour of Sharing (supporting disaster assistance, hunger programs and self-development of disadvantaged communities); Pentecost (supporting child and youth programs/initiatives and young adult volunteers); Peace and Global Witness (supporting peace and justice programs/initiatives); and, Christmas Joy (supporting racial ethnic leadership development/education at Presbyterian-related schools and colleges; and, financial support for needy current and retired Presbyterian church workers).

Special Offerings – PCUSA – Certificate of Appreciatio – 4 for 4 Congregation – 01-21-16

On Sunday, Mar. 27, 2016 (Easter Sunday) we will continue our participation as a congregation in the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering sponsored by the Special Offerings ministry of PC(USA).  Our offerings through this longstanding, ecumenical effort will allow us to share God’s love by supporting ministries that provide relief to those affected by natural disasters (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance), food for the hungry (Presbyterian Hunger Program), and support for the self-development of poor and oppressed communities (Self-Development of People).
During Lent Caring for Creation invites you to think about it!  Think About IT! During Lent substitute beans for meat or poultry in one of your favorite dishes. It’s not only good for you and your family; it’s good for the environment as well, especially if you consider that some 2500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef!

During Lent Caring for Creation invites you to think about itHow much food do you waste from uneaten leftovers and spoiled produce? On average Americans waste 1400 calories of food a day while, in 2008, 49 million Americans were food insecure. Americans disposed more than 35 million tons of food waste in 2013. Some 95 percent of this food ended up in landfills or combustion facilities. In landfills, food breaks down to produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change.

In the state of Georgia, one out of every four to five children does not know where the next meal will come from. That’s way too many. And so we walk. The Hunger Walk, an annual event hosted by the Atlanta Community Food Bank and supported by The Presbytery of Greater Atlanta is a means to provide for children and families with unstable food resources.

On March 13th 16,000 people will gather at Turner Field to help provide food for the hungry in Atlanta. The day begins with worship at the Turner Field parking lot at 11 AM. Registration starts at 12 noon followed by a group photo at the Presbytery tent at 1:30 PM. The walk itself begins at 2 PM. This fun-filled, family-friendly day is for Everyone! St. Andrews youth will be walking. To register to walk or to support those who do: Donate or Join
On Thursday, March 24th at 6:00 p.m. we will have a different kind of worship service for Maundy Thursday. We will gather on the lawn, weather permitting (in Heffner Hall if raining), to worship, share a meal, and remember the acts of Jesus during Holy week.  We will begin with opening words of worship. Then we will share a simple meal together around tables, like Jesus did with his friends. After we eat we’ll listen to scripture and a meditation on remembering. We call this day “Maundy Thursday”, from the Latin word mandatum, which means “mandate” or “command.” We remember that is the day when Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and commanded them to love one another. All are invited to participate in the footwashing, but it is not required. After we have heard the word and washed each other’s feet we will share the Lord’s Supper, which was first instituted by Jesus on the night he was betrayed.  This worship service will be casual, with music led on guitar.  This will be a child-friendly service, but childcare will be available.

Our next What’s On Wednesday (WOW) dinner is Wednesday, March 9, 6 p.m. in Heffner Hall.  Our Glory to God Kids (G2G) will have fun and dine with their table parents and then dismiss at 6:30 for their workshops preparing for Palm Sunday.

After the dinner, the adults will talk about “Do Presbyterians Have Spirit, or Do They Just Drink them?” Pastor Camille will lead a discussion about the gifts of the Spirit, spirituality, and try to figure out if the “frozen chosen” are really frozen, and if so, can they be thawed? No experience or homework required. (the discussion is based on the book, “Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt: a theological survival guide for youth, parents, and other confused Presbyterians,” by Ted Foote and Alex Thornburg.

The Chancel Choir presents “A Service of Darkness, seven choral meditations on the Last Words of Christ.” on Good Friday, March 26 7 p.m. in the sanctuary
The Service of Darkness commemorates the suffering and death of Christ and is based on the ancient Tenebrae.  Dating from the 8th century, Tenebrae was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Holy Week.  It represented the darkness that fell over the earth as the Son of God was crucified.
