This morning, June 4, on Good Morning America (ABC News), Robin Roberts accepted the Flame of Hope that had traveled over 5,000 miles from Athens, Greece to New York City. It will be making its way to the 2015 Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles. Robin ran with the Flame and several Special Olympians. The Flame will be run in all 50 states on its way to the Games.

Two athletes in our Little Light of Mine group  will  carry  the Torch. Elena Weaver will be running one leg in downtown Atlanta, and Ben Gilkerson will be carrying the Torch with his Track & Field Team in Alpharetta – on Saturday, June 6th. All of the Torch Bearers in all 50 states will be wearing the same great red shirts . This event is sponsored by Bank of America.

Elena’s leg of the Torch Run is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at 14th Street between Piedmont Ave. and Juniper Street.  Ben will be carrying the Torch in Alpharetta at 4905 North Point Pkwy about 12:10 p.m.

The Special Olympic World Games are held every four years and will probably not be back in this country for many years. So, the Little Light of Mine would love to see you at the Relay! Everyone is invited to come and line the streets and cheer our athletes on as they carry the Flame of Hope.

The newly formed SAPC movie club  will meet once per month on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, from 6:30-7:30pm.  The feature movie for the June 17 discussion will be THE CONVERSATION, starring Gene Hackman (includes mature thematic material, violent images, some language, and brief nudity sensuality).  Participants should watch the movie on their own (via Netflix or rental) and then join the group for lively discussion about the role (or absence) of religion in the story.  Also during this discussion, participants will have an opportunity to vote on their top choices for future movie discussions.  Childcare will be provided, and questions may be directed to  SAPCoutreach@gmail.comor Ddayoub@yahoo.com.

St. Andrews loves its acolytes!  Our tradition for years is for an acolyte to bring in the light of the Holy Spirit at the beginning or worship and to lead us out with the light at the end of worship.

We always need new acolytes so if you know a child, six and up, who would like to train as an acolyte to see if he or she would want to serve, please let Phyllis Bearden of the Worship Ministry know.  Training will be this Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. in the sanctuary.  Any currently serving acolytes can attend as a refresher or to help the new recruits.

One new part of the acolyte program will be to let the youngest acolyte be accompanied by an experienced acolyte for as long as he or she prefers that way.  All of us know it can be intimidating to be lighting the candles in front of everyone, even if every adult there just wants to reach out and hug them.

Acolytes are given a quarterly schedule and typically serve as an acolyte two times in a quarter.

If you haven’t completed the congregational survey online, please link to the survey or pick up a printed copy in the narthex and return the completed survey to the box in the narthex.  Once the surveys have all been received, the results will be summarized and presented to the congregation during two Family Meetings to be scheduled in the month of August.  The Session will then use the input in setting priorities for St. Andrews’ future ministry and mission.

Worship Explorer final

Summer worship is special for our kids as St. Andrews follows the Holy Moly series of Bible stories that include a video for the entire congregation and then special activities and crafts for our kids.  Our own Kristy Ray, Children/Youth Program Director, needs some help since she is getting married June 13 and won’t be around a couple of Sundays.

If you can be a substitute teacher any Sunday this summer, please sign up at Worship Explorer.  Every thing is provided – just add a kid-loving adult or two.
