Directions to St. Andrews

Located in north Georgia, Riverview Farms is a medium-sized farm that grows delicious vegetables and fruits as well as heritage breed pigs and cattle and sells directly to the end customer. Through the St. Andrews CSA, Community Supported Agriculture, that end customer can be you!

Riverview Farms practices Full Circle Farming where the land supports their livestock, and the livestock supports their land-building soil fertility for growing all of their animals’ feed, and produce. It’s a balancing act. Riverview doesn’t overreach the capacity of its pastures, fields, and forests, and never uses artificial or toxic means to force the land or animals to yield more. Their farming techniques exceed organic standards, and harkens back to a time when farming did not depend on outside, artificial support. Taste and you’ll know; their good-for-you-and-the-world practice is not only sustainable, it’s delicious too!

Each year, Riverview Farms grow over thirty varieties of certified organic flavorful vegetables and some fruit! From May to December they provide families in our community with boxes of varied produce and fruits through the CSA. Those who participate enjoy fresh, picked yesterday, sun ripened vegetables and fruits grown locally and delivered to St. Andrews.

Ready to try a different way of eating? Join the St. Andrews CSA. Sign up by contacting Mary Evans, tmevans@bellsouth.net, and paying in advance for the boxes of produce you will need during a 10 week period. The first session is May 13 – July 15. Each box costs $27.50. Think this might be more food than your family can use? Share with friend or family! This food is too good to pass up!

The last Spirit night for this school year will be held at Enzos’ on May 14 from 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m.

SAS’s last day of this school year is Friday, May 22.  The staff thanks everyone in the church for their investment of time and support that has made this a wonderful school year for the children who have attended pre-school, extended day, after-school and Kindergarten at SAS.

St. Andrews initiated the first Relay for Life in Tucker, held last May on the Tucker High School athletic track.  The event drew ten teams, most of them from local churches, and in the weeks leading up to the Relay the teams raised nearly $14,000 for the American Cancer Society.  The event itself was a wonderful community celebration with fellowship, food and live music.  This year the high school track is undergoing renovations, and our event coordinator from last year is unavailable.  But a number of those involved in 2014 want to keep the spirit alive in our community with the goal of holding another Relay at Tucker High School in 2016.  We have formed a team to participate at the DeKalb County Relay, to be held Saturday, May 16, noon to midnight, at Hallford Stadium, 3789 Memorial College Avenue in Clarkston.  If you want to join the team, or if you can support us with a donation, please go to http://relay.acsevents.org.  You can click on Search for an Event and enter “Clarkston GA,” then click on Search for a Team and enter “Tucker Relay Team.”  Or contact a member of the Mission Ministry.

The Mission Ministry has scheduled two special collections in May – one for Presbyterian Homes of Georgia on Mother’s Day, May 10; and the other for programs assisting youth and young adults on Pentecost Sunday, May 24.

The Mother’s Day collection benefits Presbyterian Homes of Georgia (PHG), a Christian ministry providing exceptional services to enhance the quality of life for senior adults.  It is a statewide ministry, serving more than 1,000 residents on five campuses with a sixth campus in development.  Leaders and staff provide the highest standards of care for all residents regardless of their financial circumstances, socioeconomic status, and racial/ethnic background.  PHG promotes the wellness of residents through innovative programming for mind, body, and spirit.  This service for frail and elderly believers depends largely on the covenant giving of congregations throughout the state, and St. Andrews has conducted the Mother’s Day collection for many years.

The Pentecost Offering, one of four Special Denominational Offerings, provides a tangible way to bring God’s transforming love to children at risk, to guide and nurture the faith of young people, and to call forth a new generation of church leadership through the PC (USA) Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program.

Gifts to the Pentecost Offering help the church encourage, develop, and support its young people. 40% of the Pentecost offering can be retained by individual congregations wanting to make an impact in the lives of young people within their own community. The remaining 60% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to improve the lives of youth and young adults around the world through such programs as the Youth Triennium and Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs). From advocacy that nurtures and protects our children, to ministries that inspire youth and those called to accompany them in their walk with Christ, your gifts serve young adults worldwide by bringing them together in fellowship, worship, and service.

When God poured out his Holy Spirit on the church at Pentecost, he created a new community-the church. There was an incredible unity among Christians at that time, according to Luke: “All who believed were together and had all things in common”.

St. Andrews will celebrate Pentecost May 24. On that day wear red and bring your gift to join with others in the transformation of young lives!

On Thursday, May 7 at 7 PM our own Pat Baker will lead us in a consensus building workshop around the question: What should older adult ministry look like at St. Andrews? This should take about an hour and half. At the end of our time exploring and brainstorming we won’t necessarily have a definite plan of action, but we will have an agreed upon understanding of the direction we’d like to go in in the future. We hope anyone who is interested or would like to know more will join us. Participation does not commit you to any other future responsibilities related to the discussion. Please let Camille (camille@standrewspresbyterian.org) know if you are able to join us for this opportunity.

WOW on April 29 will be led by Rev. Karen Webster, an ordained Presbyterian pastor and a certified Exercise Physiologist and Nutrition Manager who is currently working on a Doctor of Ministry degree in Christian Spirituality at Columbia Seminary.

Karen will lead our “Moving in Wholeness” as we acknowledge and engage God’s intention for all of creation to “move”. We will discover how the biblical witness testifies to a story of movement… movement not just for the sake of moving, but movement towards wholeness. As Christians who take seriously our being created in the image of God, we are called to understand the movement to wholeness: within ourselves, with our neighbors, and in God’s creation. This curriculum not only looks at what the Bible says about health, food, and ecology, but it also provides participants practical tools and resources for improving overall physical, mental, and spiritual fitness.

The meal will be catered by Greater Good Barbecue so come out for great food and a great program.

Preparing for Worship: This Sunday we are celebrating God’s created earth. We will be looking at  how we have destroyed the good creation and how God is creating in us possibilities of a new heaven and a new earth. Our scripture readings are Revelation 21:1-10 and Isaiah 24: 3-6, 10-22.
