The Lilburn Summer Singers will lead worship music on Sunday, August 24th, and then perform a concert at 3:00 p.m. in our sanctuary under the direction of Ed Weaver.

Ed, who is the St. Andrews organist,  has directed this accomplished group for years and has chosen a program of exclusively American composers  including works by Howard Helvey, Moses Hogan, Morton Lauridsen and Paul Hogan.  A majority of the works will be performed acapella.

Several St. Andrews musicians perform with this group: Heather Morse, David and Kjersti Lukens, Jeff Bunce, Kathe Gowland, and Phyllis Bearden.

If you can’t make this concert, the Lilburn Summer Singers will be in concert at Lilburn Christian Church on Sunday, August 17th, at 3:00 p.m. and at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody on Sunday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m.

The Singers practice in the St. Andrews Choir room during the summer and present the concert as a gift of their worship.  There’s no charge for admission, but the group would like to collect donations for NetWorks.

We always enjoy worship when our youth take over in the summer time.  Come out to support them this Sunday.

Alliance for Children Everywhere has posted an article about another of our favorite mission efforts contributing to the welfare of Zambian children in school with the meals packed by participants in Stop Hunger Now.

Kim Rometo sent this article because she had seen the Stop Hunger Packets being used when she was on her mission trip to Zambia.  “I thought about how the packets we packed at St. Andrews might have helped a child we also supporter through our Change for Children, ” Kim remarked.

Our first of the month contributions to Change for Children finances our support of the Aliiance for Children Everywhere.  The first Sunday of the month is Communion Sunday and members’ opportunities to contribute loose change collected during the month.  During the Offertory members come forward to place their change in the large woven basket in front of the chancel.

St. Andrews actions are part of change in the world for good.

Please join us for our third quarter “Welcome to St Andrews Information Session/Reception”, which will be Sunday, August 17 , from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the parlor at the rear of the narthex (our lobby).  This is a low-key, informal session for visitors to learn more about St. Andrews, its  programs/activities, and thePresbyterian faith.  Childcare will be provided.  Registration is not required, but any questions can be directed to the Outreach Ministry ( SAPCoutreach@gmail.com).  We hope to see your there.

How to Join St. Andrews

New members are received by Session, St. Andrews’ governing body, in one of the four ways:

  1. By Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ before Session and then the congregation.      If you were previously baptized, but never made a public profession.
  2. By Profession of Faith in Jesus Christ and Baptism. If you have not been baptized,      you may join by making a public profession of faith before Session and the      congregation and then being baptized in a Sunday morning worship service.
  3. By Reaffirmation of Faith. If you have been a member of a Christian church, but have not been active in      recent years, you may join by re-affirming your need of, and dependence      on, the grace and love of God.
  4. By Certificate of Transfer. If you have made a profession of faith and are a member of another church, you may join by transferring your certificate of membership from the church that you are leaving to join St. Andrews

Thornwell Home for Children in Clinton, SC, has been a mission supported by St. Andrews for years.  Through Presbyterian Women, Thornwell has invited us to make a day trip on Friday August 22, to learn more about this mission and its home and school for children.  Please contact Mary Evans at tmevans@bellsouth.net if you are interested in a day trip to Thornwell.

Screen on the Green has been a family and kids fun time this summer.  Mark August 8th to attend  and enjoy a movie with “frozen” treats on the side.  Outreach shows the movie on the inner courtyard are of the church, and families can bring picnics and blankets to enjoy a free movie.   The lawn opens at 7;45 p.m. with the movie starting at 8:30 p.m.  Invite your friends and neighbors for this free family activity, and don’t be shy if you don’t have kids.  Enjoy this great movie and the fun of kids playing.

An added highlight is that kids (and adults) are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite animated character, whether “cool” or another Disney hero.  What fun just to see the kids!

If you can help with the event, please email Outreach at SAPCoutreach@gmail.com.

Don’t miss this last movie!

The Music Ministry wants the congregation to get the full effect of our new hymnal by attending a Lunch and Learn on Sunday, August 10ht, at 11 a.m. (or right after church).  Worship will provide sandwiches and drinks, and the Music guys will provide some great education and music from the new hymnal.  (Hint: you may see some new hymnals that day)  No promises, but please mark that day and plan to attend.

Nursery care will be available too.

The Worship and Music Ministry is so excited about introducing and using this wonderful new hymnal.  All of us thank you for your financial support and encouragement as we raised the fund.

Second Carnival

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker, home of a great church pre-school and after-school program, holds its fourth annual “Back to School Carnival” on Saturday, August 16, 2014, 10 am to 1 pm, on the church property at 4882 Lavista Road. The Carnival is a gift to the community so everything is free.

Activities  include face painting, bounce houses, spin art, a petting zoo, Bible stories and church songs, plus hotdogs, chips, snow cones and other snacks.

“It’s really a lot of fun for families with young children,” said Tiffany Held, one of the event planners. “It’s an opportunity to experience our hospitality, see our campus and ask questions about our programs.”

St. Andrews Church was started in the early 1960’s and first opened the school in 1969. Today, it serves more than 100 pre-school children ranging in age from six months to five years old, and provides an after-school program for students in grades one through five. It also offers a day camp during summer months.

Last year’s carnival drew a crowd of more than 250 parents and children even though it was a rainy day. If you have young children and are looking for a pre-school or an after-school program that teaches values as well as core skills, or are just looking for a new church home, we would love to see you on Saturday August 16 at the St. Andrews 2014 “Back to School Carnival.”
