Second Carnival

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker, home of a great church pre-school and after-school program, holds its fourth annual “Back to School Carnival” on Saturday, August 16, 2014, 10 am to 1 pm, on the church property at 4882 Lavista Road. The Carnival is a gift to the community so everything is free.

Activities  include face painting, bounce houses, spin art, a petting zoo, Bible stories and church songs, plus hotdogs, chips, snow cones and other snacks.

“It’s really a lot of fun for families with young children,” said Tiffany Held, one of the event planners. “It’s an opportunity to experience our hospitality, see our campus and ask questions about our programs.”

St. Andrews Church was started in the early 1960’s and first opened the school in 1969. Today, it serves more than 100 pre-school children ranging in age from six months to five years old, and provides an after-school program for students in grades one through five. It also offers a day camp during summer months.

Last year’s carnival drew a crowd of more than 250 parents and children even though it was a rainy day. If you have young children and are looking for a pre-school or an after-school program that teaches values as well as core skills, or are just looking for a new church home, we would love to see you on Saturday August 16 at the St. Andrews 2014 “Back to School Carnival.”

The Presbyterian Coffee Project

for all who love making a difference – building a bridge through Fair Trade – enjoying in an excellent cup

Most small-scale farmers are isolated from markets and exploited by intermediaries. Consequently, they haven’t sufficient money to provide education and health care for their families.  The Presbyterian Coffee Project, a partner in the Equal Exchange Interfaith Coffee Program, offers products that are100% fairly traded in accordance with internationally recognized standards. By purchasing these products, we share the benefits of trade with the farmers who produce them and also help to create a more just, green and healthy world.

Coffee, whole bean or drip grind in 10 oz., 12 oz., 14 oz. and pound packages, are valve sealed and will stay fresh for months if kept in a cool, dry place.

Organic teas are packaged 20 bags to the box.

Organic hot cocoa mix is available in 12 oz. cans.

Organic chocolate bars are 3.5 oz. Organic chocolate minis are 4.5g bars.

St. Andrews orders coffee and tea in February, May, August and November. Chocolate is ordered in November and February.  Additional product information may be found at http://www.equalexchange.coop/

The first Screen on the Green was so much fun for kids and families that you don’t want to miss it.  On Friday, July 11, the lawn opens at 7:45 p.m. and the movie starts at 8 p.m. Monsters’ University is the scheduled movie and there will be free popcorn and lemonade and maybe other surprises.

About 50 adults and children had the best time watching the movie and playing on the lawn.  Don’t miss this fun fellowship time.

The Nominating Committee needs to identify and nominate a slate of five elder and four deacon candidates to present to the congregation this fall.  Members of the congregation can suggest candidates or volunteer to serve by sharing these names with any member of the Committee, or they can complete the Nominating Committee Suggestion Card (found in the church pews) and return in the offering plate by Sunday, July 6.  The Nominating Committee members are Rachel Nelson, Deby Brooke, Ted Heffner, David Dayoub, Lisa Wolfgang, Heather Morse and Rachel Ellingson.

The Fidelis Sunday School Class meets in the Library at 9 a.m. in the summer.  On Sunday, July 6, Joseph Cooper will lead the class in an exploration of how surrounding nations may have  made an impact or influenced the ancient Israelites, for good or bad.

The Session voted to move Communion to this Sunday, June 29.  Rev. Mary Jane Cornell can’t be present on July 6 so Communion will be a Sunday early so the church will have an ordained minister present.

On Sunday, June 29, at 9:30 a.m. all the Sunday School teachers are invited to enjoy homemade scones, fruit, juice and coffee in the meeting room. The Session and Education Ministry wants to celebrate your hard work and dedication to this important job.

Journey Night Shelter is one of St. Andrews local mission efforts.  We support their mission by donating and serving dinner to approximately 30 homeless men twice a month on the first and third Fridays of the month with any fifth Friday covered by Kim Rometo and her company.

Please check out their website to find out more about this mission which provides training and help with job searching and other skills for self-reliance.

This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ on earth.  You can volunteer as a family or as a group, and it’s a great experience for children who provide a way to interact  with folks.

The Potpourri Class is serving this Friday, June 20, and will have dessert donated by our own Sweet Dee.  If you want to volunteer for this Friday, contact Phyllis Bearden at pbearden47@bellsouth.net.

Beloved long-time member of St. Andrews passed away Sunday, June 15 surrounded by her loving family.  Jane was a faithful member and known for her energy, artistic talents and her bright smile.  We value all the time and talents and joy she gave St. Andrews.

Her service will be in our sanctuary at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 19.  In lieu of flowers, the family encourages to donations in her memory to St. Andrews or the Gwinnett Humane Society in Lawrenceville.
