Let’s Fight Hunger Together! Order Coffee Now! Fighting hunger is at the heart of the Presbyterian understanding of mission. Jesus fed the hungry and told his disciples to do the same. Hunger today is an extremely complex phenomenon with economic, political and social causes. The denomination’s Hunger Program of which the Coffee Project is a part, does “root cause’ work to address underlying issues of hunger and reduce it. For each pound of fairly traded coffee, chocolate, and tea purchased through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, 15 cents per pound goes to the PCUSA’s Small Farmer Fund which generated $9,475.68 in 2019 to support small farmer projects in coffee growing regions around the world. One example is a project in Nigeria that supported 200 farmer households by providing water pumping machines for irrigation farming, rice and vegetable seedlings. The beneficiaries of the Small Farmer Fund are being supported with training on best farming practices, project monitoring and post distribution to kick-start farmer livelihoods. Your purchases through the Coffee Project will provide funding for the Small Farmer Fund to continue helping world farmers. Please order using this form or send your requests to Mary Evans, tmevans@bellsouth.net, 770-493-9489 by Tuesday, August 18. Anticipate delivery of products Labor Day weekend.

Come Hell or High Water Movie St. Andrews has purchased a pass for up to 150 people in our congregation to view this new movie from the comfort of their own home. The movie, “follows the painful but inspiring journey of Derrick Evans, a Boston teacher who moves home to coastal Mississippi, when the graves of his ancestors are bulldozed to make way for the sprawling city of Gulfport. Over the course of a decade, Derrick and his neighbors stand up to powerful corporate interests and politicians, and face ordeals that include Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster in their struggle for self-determination and environmental justice.” Click here to view the movie trailer. With DeKalb County’s decision to go back to school online only starting in mid-August, NETWorks has finally  been able to solidify our plans for the Good Neighbor Back to School Shop. With the complications caused by the coronavirus, they’re revamping the Shop completely. This year, NETWorks will be providing free supplies in a drive-thru style distribution. Using new backpacks filled with supplies, they can meet many of the supply needs. They’ll need to augment those supplies with some age-specific items.

Our Mission Ministry is asking your help in making this happen, and in a rather shortened timeline.NETWorks is planning to distribute the items Sunday, July 27.  It’s  easier to donate this year. SAPC members can donate to buy the backpacks and pre-packed supplies or they can send NETWorks  the few items listed below (mainly for K-2nd grades). A backpack full of supplies is $15

  • 8-10 count markers (broad tip)
  • Loose leaf paper (wide ruled)
  • 3- ring binders, 2”

All of this information and a donate button is available at www.networkscoop.org/bts. Donations can be made at https://bit.ly/BTS-Covid, set up specifically for the school event.
