Once, when joining a club in college, a more seasoned member’s advice to me was, “You’ll get out of it what you put into it.” I’ve found that to be true throughout my life. The more I invest and get involved, the more ownership and enjoyment I feel and the deeper friendships I nurture.

That’s what St. Andrews’ Engagement Ministry is all about…helping our St. Andrews family connect with one another to find the meaning and friendships we look for at church. We also work to engage our community, helping those seeking connections and purpose to find a welcoming home at St. Andrews.

Two of the primary ways we accomplish our work is through hosting fellowship meals and receptions at the church, and by interacting with the Tucker community through activities like children’s craft booths at Tucker Days and Christmas on Main or our annual Back to School Carnival. We also welcome volunteers with skills in graphic design, writing, marketing, photography, and video production to help us create promotional materials and content for social media. And every member of St. Andrews can be part of the Engagement Ministry by helping us to welcome visitors and new members, whether it’s a hello before worship, an invitation to lunch after the service, or an introduction to a Sunday School class or St. Andrews’ volunteer opportunity.

To serve on the Engagement Ministry committee, to join our mailing list for upcoming opportunities for service, or to volunteer a specific talent for our work, please contact Paige McKay Kubik

On the afternoon of Sunday, March 11, St. Andrews will host a seminar entitled Life’s Fifth Season. This event is for YOU…no matter your age. If you are not aware now, at some time you will know that you are aging or that your parents are getting older, or that a child or loved one may never be able to function without assistance. Life’s Fifth Season is designed to open your mind and your heart to the options and the challenges before you and to suggest ways to find the answers you will need.

Lunch will be offered from Noon to 1 p.m.

Presentations on physical/medical issues, legal issues, advanced directives and planning memorial services will be discussed between 1 and 4 p.m.. Childcare will be available. Registration forms for adults, $10, and for children under 12, $5, will be in the narthex mid-February.

Please save the date! This event is for us all!

By February resolutions made for the new year have often fallen away as good intentions slip into routines that are comfortable. Meanwhile the world we inhabit continues to encourage us to consume food, drink and material goods. So, what can we do to be more sustainable and even to use our purchasing power for good?

Here are some ideas to shake up those usual patterns or traditions:

  1. Take those reusable bags when shopping.
  2. Instead of buying things, look for experiences to share together, or give your time in your community.
  3. Find out who owns the companies you support with your dollars. These ownership charts may help.
  4. Ask where things come from – where it was grown or produced? Who benefits?
  5. Use your purchasing power to create change and start by supporting the Presbyterian Coffee Project sales of fairly traded coffee, chocolate and tea.

Each February, May, August and November St. Andrews orders coffee and tea (chocolate in November and February). These products are fairly traded giving the farmers a better return on their effort and encouraging farmers to continue to produce the products we enjoy without the use of pesticides and fungicides and without damaging the environment. These products are of high quality and provide different roasts to allow everyone to find a favorite.

Order forms are in the narthex or can be accessed from Mary Evans. Please order by February 12 for delivery the end of February
